Who can read my messages?

Messages sent from the app are sealed between phones. A message typed into the web portal is not — and we say so rather than pretend otherwise.

A message sent from the CruiseChattr app is encrypted on your device before it goes anywhere, with a key held only by you and the person you are writing to. The phones that relay it carry a sealed packet they cannot open. Neither can we.

There is one exception, and it is worth stating plainly rather than burying.

If you type a message into the family or crew portal in a web browser, that message is not sealed the same way. A browser has no mesh key to seal it with, so it reaches our server readable before it goes into the mesh. If that matters for what you are about to write, send it from the app instead.

We would rather tell you that than claim everything is end-to-end encrypted and be wrong about it.

Did that answer it?

If not, tell us what is still wrong — that is how this page gets better.
