What is worth pre-booking, and what can wait?

Book the things there is only one of.

Speciality restaurants, the excursions everyone wants, spa slots on sea days, anything with a fixed number of seats — those go before you sail on a full ship. If there is one particular night at one particular restaurant you are set on, that is a pre-book and it is not close.

Everything else can wait. The main dining room, the pools, the gym, the shows on most lines. You are not going to be locked out.

The counter-argument is real though: pre-book everything and you have built yourself a schedule, on a holiday whose main advantage is not having one. Plenty of experienced cruisers deliberately book nothing and decide over breakfast.

What have you pre-booked and then resented having to turn up for? That is the more interesting half of this question.
