What do you wish you had known before your first contract?

This one is a real question from us, not an answer dressed up as one.
We build the software. We do not live aboard for eight months at a stretch, and the distance between those two things is where we get it wrong.
So: what would you tell somebody joining their first ship? What to bring that nobody lists. What the first week is actually like. How you handle the time difference with home without wrecking your sleep. What the connectivity situation really is, as opposed to what you were told at interview.
If this board ends up being crew talking to crew while we mostly read, that is the right outcome and we will stay out of the way.
