Isn't WiFi calling or my carrier's international plan enough instead of this?
Short answer: no, and here is the actual difference.
WiFi calling and your carrier's international or cruise plan both need the ship's WiFi, or the ship's cell tower, turned on and paid for. No signal to the shore satellite that hour, or you didn't buy the pass, and you're offline, same as everyone without it.
CruiseChattr doesn't touch either one. Phones talk to each other over Bluetooth, deck to deck, with zero internet and zero cell signal involved. It works in a dead zone belowdecks where WiFi calling has nothing to call out on.
The tradeoff is honest: this only reaches other phones on the ship, and only while you're both in range or someone carries the message between you. It is not a replacement for calling home. For that you still need the ship's WiFi or your carrier. It replaces texting the people already aboard with you, free, with nothing to buy.
If you've had WiFi calling drop constantly at sea, that's the gap this fills. What ship or line gave you the worst WiFi-calling experience?
