What AIDA is actually like, and who it suits

Start with the thing nobody tells English speakers: AIDA is a German-market line. Announcements, entertainment, daily programme, the people at your table — German first, and often German only.

If you speak it, or want to, that is a feature. The onboard style is casual to a degree that surprises people coming from American lines: no formal nights to speak of, buffet-forward dining, a club atmosphere rather than a ballroom one. The ships are bright and modern and the sports and spa facilities are usually strong.

If you do not speak German, be honest with yourself about how much that will wear on you across a week. Plenty of people do it happily. Others spend the cruise feeling slightly outside the joke.

Sailed AIDA as a non-German speaker? That is the review this board needs most.
